Training: Instructor

Instructor Training Course (ITC) / Instructor Evaluation (IE)

"The" Dive Shop uses the Scuba Diving International (SDI) training course to prepare instructors to teach entry level scuba diving programs.

Pre-requisites: Participant must be at least 18 years of age, have logged a minimum of 100 dives, be qualified as an active Dive Leader ( Divemaster or the equivalent)

The Instructor Training Course is designed to teach otherwise qualified dive leaders how to teach the skills and knowledge that are necessary to safely scuba dive. Candidates' skills and knowledge will be assessed at the beginning of the program to insure that they are prepared to participate in the ITC.

The Instructor Training Process consists of:

  1. Home Preparation - in this step, the candidate completes homework assignments by following the Instructor Candidate Study Guide included in the Instructor Training materials.

  2. The Instructor Training Course - the application, practice, and skill development process. Candidates conduct practice teaching presentations in the classroom and pool, participate in workshops, complete mini-quizzes. To successfully complete the instructor course, candidates must pass all of the presentations, workshops, mini-exams, and study guide questions. The candidate is now qualified for the performance review.

  3. Rescue Instructor Training Course -  this portion of the program is optional, but is a nice complement to the instructor course.  Upon completion of this program, the candidate will be qualified to teach a popular specialty course.

  4. Performance Review - a required, documented step in the instructor training process. If the candidate is not ready to attend an evaluation, the Instructor Trainer can direct the candidate to act as an Associate Instructor in order to gain experience under supervision prior to attending the Evaluation.

  5. Open Water Instructor Evaluation - this is the testing process. The candidate must pass a final academic examination and successfully make classroom and in-water teaching presentations.

  6. Final Performance Review - the final step of the Instructor Evaluation process. This is the point where the instructor certifier makes the final decision as to whether the candidate should become an Open Water Instructor.

This ITC/IE program is regularly scheduled throughout the year. Please contact us for more information.

Tuition for the ITC/IE is $900. Required training materials are SDI Instructor Training Materials (approximately $200). Upon completion of the program, candidates must pay SDI registration fee (approximately $125).

"The" Dive Shop also conducts instructor seminars for a variety of specialty diver programs.

Our next scheduled program will start in Fall of 2008
