| Occasionally, students in the Learn to Dive program prefer to
do their open water training dives at a remote site, such as Florida or the Caribbean. The system that is used to facilitate this procedure is called an
open water referral.
Referral documents are completed by the instructor for the student. This
document assures other dive instructors that the student has completed the pool
portion of the Learn to Dive
program, includes information about the final examination and a copy of the
student's medical history (and physician's release, if necessary). The
instructor signs the material and turns it over to the student. The referral
document is valid for 6 months.
The student turns the referral document over to any certified instructor who
will be completing the open water training dives. After the completion of each
dive, the instructor should sign off on the appropriate log book page. At the
completion of all of the training dives, the instructor should sign the
appropriate referral documents and return them to the student.
Students completing referrals should not have to pay for additional
certification cards. As long as the training dives are being completed in a
timely fashion, no new test should be expected either. It is not unreasonable to
expect a pool or confined water session prior to the first open water training
dive. This affords you the opportunity to become used to the new instructor and
vice versa.
Referral documents and log books should be returned to the staff of
"The" Dive Shop in order to receive your permanent internationally
recognized certification card.
The fee for referral documents is $20.00.
In the event that referral Open Water Training
Dives cannot be completed, TDS can arrange to conduct your open water dives
locally.
